Types of Sod on Long Island

The right grass depends on your sun, soil and how you use the yard. Here's how our varieties compare.

Kentucky Bluegrass

Best for: Full sun, curb appeal, active yards

Rich color, dense growth and fast recovery from wear. The classic Long Island lawn, ideal for front yards and high-visibility spaces. Often blended with fescue to handle partial shade.

  • Deep green color
  • Repairs itself by spreading
  • Prefers 6+ hours of sun
  • Needs regular watering in summer

Fescue blends

Best for: Shade, drought, low maintenance

Deep roots and a soft texture make tall fescue blends a smart pick for shaded lots under mature trees and for yards that dry out. Low maintenance and tough through Long Island summers.

  • Good shade tolerance
  • Deep roots, drought resistant
  • Soft underfoot
  • Lower fertilizer needs

Zoysia

Best for: Hot, sunny, high-traffic yards

Thick, carpet-like turf that handles heat, drought and heavy traffic, with slow growth that means less mowing. It goes tan earlier in fall and greens up later in spring than cool-season grass.

  • Excellent heat tolerance
  • Crowds out weeds
  • Less mowing
  • Needs full sun

Shade-tolerant mixes

Best for: Yards that don't get full sun

Custom blends for lawns under trees or beside tall homes, where bluegrass alone would thin out. We match the mix to how much light your yard actually gets.

  • Built for 3 to 5 hours of sun
  • Fine fescues in the mix
  • Good for North Shore lots
  • Ask us about your light

Not sure which one fits?

We'll help you weigh lawn use, maintenance and conditions, compare options side by side, and bring samples on request. Sandy South Shore yards, shaded North Shore lots and windy East End properties each call for something a little different.
