Sod Questions, Answered
Ordering, installing and caring for sod on Long Island.
FAQ
Sod basics
What is sod?+
Sod is grass that is already grown, harvested from a farm with a thin layer of soil and roots. It rolls out onto prepared soil for an instant lawn.
Why choose sod instead of grass seed?+
Sod gives you a finished lawn the day it goes down, with fewer weeds and faster establishment. Seed can take months to fill in and needs constant care while it germinates.
What types of sod do you offer?+
Kentucky Bluegrass, fescue blends (including Tall Fescue), Zoysia and shade-tolerant mixes, all suited to Long Island's climate and soils. See our sod types page to compare them.
How much sod do I need?+
Measure each area's length and width in feet and multiply for square feet, then add 5 to 10 percent for trimming. Each pallet covers 600 square feet. Our sod calculator does the math.
FAQ
Installation
When is the best time to install sod on Long Island?+
Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are best, thanks to moderate temperatures and strong root growth. Summer installs work with a good watering plan.
Can I install sod myself?+
Yes, with good soil prep, watering and technique. Many customers order delivery and lay it themselves with our guidance. We also offer professional installation.
How do I prepare my soil before laying sod?+
Remove existing grass and weeds, level the soil and fix drainage where needed, then apply a starter fertilizer to encourage strong roots.
How soon should I water new sod?+
Immediately after installation, then 2 to 3 times a day for the first two weeks to keep it moist.
FAQ
Care and maintenance
When can I mow my new sod?+
Wait at least 2 to 3 weeks until the sod has firmly rooted, and keep the mower blade high.
How often should I water after the first few weeks?+
Once established, water 2 to 3 times per week so the lawn gets about 1 to 1.5 inches of water a week.
Can I use weed killer on new sod?+
Avoid herbicides for at least 6 weeks after installation. Hand-pull early weeds instead.
Do I need to fertilize my sod?+
Yes. Apply a starter fertilizer right after installation and keep fertilizing each season for strong, green grass.
Will my sod survive the winter?+
Yes. Sod goes dormant in winter and greens up again in spring with proper care.
